Shock snowfall hits as Ireland’s weather woes continue after 57 days of rain with 6hr alert ahead of -2C freeze blast

PARTS of Ireland were hit with shock snowfall today as Ireland’s woeful weather this year continues.

Snow was seen falling in the village of Valleymount in Co Wicklow and in the surrounding area.

It can be seen coating the tops of cars and lying on the road, houses, and in gardens.

The Dublin mountains were also covered in snow after the shock change in weather.

Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather confirmed the freezing forecast on social media.

Posting on X, he said: “That heavy rain slowly moving East but falling as snow on high ground with lying snow on Wicklow Mountains now.”

Frost and ice were spotted on roads around parts of the country despite a sunny afternoon yesterday.

This week saw an end to the torrential rain which has battered Ireland since December.

Weather experts recently revealed that the country had seen 57 days of consecutive rain.

However, forecasters have said we are not out of the woods yet as multiple weather warnings have been put in place.

Met Eireann issued yellow rain warnings for six counties that are in place today.

The alert is in place for Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, and Waterford.

It came into effect at noon and lasts until 6pm this evening.

Weather boffins said “blustery rain with spot flooding” may lead to “difficult travel”.

And temperatures could drop to as low as -2C tonight, Met Eireann have warned.

They said there will be “heavy and persistent rain across the eastern half of the country for a time this evening with low cloud and mist” and warned “some wintry falls may occur on higher ground” today.

And tonight will see frost and ice develop in parts of the country.

Tomorrow is set to be dry and sunny although the morning will see more ice and frost.

Temperatures will be between 8C and 11C.

Saturday will see the weather take a more cheerful turn despite a cold Friday night at -2C.

Met Eireann predicted: “Thicker cloud may build in the south and east with the chance of a little light rain or drizzle at times.

“Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds, fresher along Atlantic coasts.”

And Sunday will turn cloudy with outbreaks of rain developing.

Temperatures are set to be between nine and 13 degrees.
