A voluntary group known as the Wharfedale Wombles came across wounded Mason on Sunday as they collected rubbish at Burley in Wharfedale, Bradford.

Some of the group tried to help Mason and keep him comfortable until an ambulance arrived at the scene.

But despite the best efforts of emergency services, the father later died of his injuries.

John Robinson, 30, of Menston, West Yorks, has since been charged with murder, said cops.

Robinson appeared before Bradford Magistrates’ Court earlier, West Yorkshire Police said.

Following the hearing he was remanded in custody to appear at Bradford Crown Court on Friday.

A 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old woman initially arrested in connection with the incident have been bailed.

Mason’s family have since issued a moving statement paying tribute to him via West Yorkshire Police.

It read: “To have our boy taken from us in such a heartbreaking way is something no family or partner should ever have to face.

“He has been taken from us far too soon, and from his beautiful children.

“Mason’s infectious smile and joyful spirit will live on in our hearts and in the precious memories we hold on to.

“His partner, family and friends are still trying to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.

“We simply ask that justice is done for our boy.”

Members of the Wharfedale Wombles told how they stumbled across Mason on their litter pick at the weekend and stayed with him until an ambulance arrived.

In a post on Facebook, one member said: “Thank you to the Wombles who found some items, which were handed to police as potential evidence, as well as being with the victim as help arrived.

“It was upsetting, and we hope everyone looks after themselves.

“Notwithstanding the above drama, we did have a good turnout, with 24 people attending and collecting 26 bags of litter.

“Thank you to everyone who pitched up and pitched in today.”
