The world’s busiest international hub, which sees around a quarter of a million passengers pass through each day, has halted flights until “further notice”.

Smoke has also been spotted billowing from Jebel Ali port, where US naval assets had gathered in recent weeks.

Tehran is launching revenge strikes across the Middle East after joint US-Israeli strikes killed its Supreme Leader on Saturday.

An Iranian state TV presenter broke down in tears as he announced the death of bloodthirsty dictator, Ali Khamenei, on Sunday morning.

Peter, a Brit finance executive in his 50s who re-located to Dubai last year described the situation as “completely surreal”.

He told The Sun: “We heard several loud explosions overnight and early this morning and a couple mid-afternoon.”

Fighter jets can be heard overhead as people flock to the supermarket to stock up on supplies, Peter said.

Iran has vowed to launch its “most intense offensive operation” ever in retaliation, targeting Israeli and American bases with “regret-inducing punishment”.

A shopping centre is reportedly ablaze in Sharjah, a major port city and the third-most populous in the United Arab Emirates.

Footage shows huge plumes of smoke rising from behind towering buildings where a drone reportedly fell, sparking the blaze.

People may be trapped under the rubble, local media Nexta reports.

The UAE’s Ministry of Defence said 137 ballistic missiles had been launched by Iran towards the Emirates as of late last night.

But air defences destroyed 132, and five fell into the Persian Gulf.

A woman and child sustained minor injuries from falling debris after a drone was intercepted at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Towers, according to the government.

The latest blasts come just hours after one person died and seven were left injured at an Abu Dhabi airport while another blast rocked Dubai airport.

Both airports were struck after Iran launched a barrage of rockets at nations across the region.

Dubai Media Office confirmed last night that a concourse at Dubai International Airport sustained “minor damage in an incident that was quickly contained”.

In a statement, they said: “Four staff sustained injuries and received prompt medical attention.”

Horrific footage circulating online shows smoke filling the airport terminal while scores of passengers and staff could be seen evacuating.

At least one person was killed and seven wounded during an “incident” at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport.

Officials said: “Abu Dhabi Airports has confirmed that an incident took place at Zayed International Airport and resulted in one fatality involving an Asian national and seven injuries.”

Dubai officials have not commented on Sunday’s strikes.

Bahrain’s Ministry of the Interior also revealed Bahrain International Airport was damaged by a drone.

In a post on X, it said: “Targeting of Bahrain International Airport with a drone, resulting in material damage without loss of life, at a time when the relevant authorities are initiating procedures to secure the site.”

Iran’s attack came after the Islamic Republic warned that it “has no red lines” following an unprecedented blitz by the US, dubbed Epic Fury.

The Sun reported on Saturday how thousands of tourists have been left stranded at airports with both Iranian and Iraqi airspace closed as the conflicts intensify.

As Israel fired missiles into Iran – and Tehran responded – aircraft normally routed across the region were forced into sudden diversions.

Holidaymakers in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, described hearing a series of loud explosions, while hotel staff distributed free ice lollies to help keep guests calm.

Later in the day, tourists were instructed to remain indoors to stay clear of debris from missiles that had been intercepted.

British Airways passenger Mike Boreham was fully boarded on flight BA108 from Dubai to Heathrow when the captain made the announcement.

“We were all boarded,” he told The Independent.

“The flight is completely full. About 10 minutes after the ‘boarding complete’ announcement we were told airspace is closed.”

It comes after a hotel in Dubai was engulfed in flames, leaving four injured after debris from Iran’s missile blitz hit the tourist hotspot.

Black smoke was seen billowing across the skyline in Dubai after the luxury hotel Fairmont The Palm was struck.

Shocking footage showed what appeared to be a kamikaze drone smashing into the hotel in the plush Palm Jumeirah district – although conflicting reports suggested it may have been hit by missile debris.

The Burj Al Arab was also struck on Saturday night, with thick plumes of black smoke seen billowing from the building.

Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities on Saturday, including the capital, Tehran, after talks aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme collapsed without agreement earlier this week.
