BABY HORROR

Monster who shook teen girlfriend’s baby son just one week after they first met is jailed for life

A MONSTER who shook his teen girlfriend’s baby son to death just a week after meeting her has been locked up for life.

Kieran Humphreys, 33, was left to look after six-month-old Archie after meeting then 19-year-old Saskia Woodbridge on February 2 last year.

Luton Crown Court heard how Humphreys had showered Saskia with affection until she believed he would be her “saviour”.

The teenager, who is now 20, wanted to get her nails done on February 9 – a week after meeting him.

She trusted Humphreys to care for her son at a friend’s home in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, while she went for the treatment.

But Humphreys, who had stayed up through the previous night playing Call Of Duty on his Xbox, “gripped and shook” the infant when he lost his temper.

The vile killer inflicted fatal brain injuries on baby Archie, who tragically died a day later.

But the jury heard how instead of calling for an ambulance, the 33-year-old and his friend Karen Smith waited until Saskia returned home.

They then took the baby to a relative’s house before ringing 999 and paramedics rushed the tot to hospital.

Callous Humphreys lied to officers during a police interview and said: “I ain’t done nothing wrong. I would never hurt a child.

“I love that kid like my own. He wasn’t dropped or squeezed or whatever you are trying to say… he wasn’t injured in my arms.

“It wasn’t me. All I did was try to save that boy.”

Meanwhile Saskia told cops Humphreys, his mother Sharon, and friend Smith had “made her lie about what happened and when”.

Humphreys also pressured her into lying that he was alone with Archie, she said.

Prosecutor Charlotte Newell KC told the court: “It transpired he [Archie] had a fatal injury – gripped and shaken with force while in the sole care of Kieran Humphreys.

“He has provided no alternative explanation as to how or why this otherwise healthy baby died whilst in his sole care.”

Miss Newell told jurors: “The priority of Kieran Humphreys from the get-go was to save his own skin, regardless of the welfare of the child.”

Humphreys was convicted of murder and cruelty to a child by the jury.

Smith, 40, her partner Sam Wyatt, 36, and Sharon Humphreys, 59, all admitted conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Today, Humphreys was sentenced at Luton Crown Court to a minimum of 21 years in prison.

Sharon Humphreys was jailed for nine months.

Karen Smith received a 12-month prison sentence and Sam Wyatt was sentenced to 15 months in jail.
