The Independent has reported that he was discovered unresponsive after failing to show for mass in New Ross, where he served as co-parish priest.

Early indications are that he suffered a medical emergency at some point during the night.

The community has been left in “shock” following the news, with Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy being among those to lead the tributes.

Murphy said she is “heartbroken” to hear of the sudden death of Fr Furlong.

The Independent TD for Wexford said: “A priest of huge warmth, kindness and energy, he was loved across Wexford and supported so many people in their lives.

“He was a loyal friend and confidant to me, and his passing leaves a real void.

“Sincere sympathy to his parents Tom and Angela, his sisters Niamh and Majella, his sister-in-law Lulu, his nieces and nephews, and the extended Furlong and Hussey families, and many many friends everywhere.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

The Franciscan Friary in Wexford said the death of Fr Furlong brings “great sadness”, adding that funeral arrangements will be confirmed later.

In an emotional tribute on social media, the Ferns Diocese Pilgrimage to Lourdes group said Fr Furlong’s presence shaped their pilgrimage in ways “that words can scarcely capture”.

It said: “Fr Odhrán was more than a leader; he was the heart of our pilgrimage. As youth leader and director, he poured his energy, faith, and joy into every aspect of the journey.

“He walked beside the sick with tenderness and dignity, ensuring that each person felt seen, valued, and loved.

‘A MAN OF COMPASSION’

“He inspired our young people not simply with words, but with example — showing them what faith in action truly looks like.”

The group said Fr Furlong had a “rare gift” of lifting spirits effortlessly, adding: ” In the midst of long days and emotional moments, he brought laughter. In times of quiet reflection, he brought depth.

“His sermons were unforgettable — you could find yourself laughing one minute and wiping away tears the next. He spoke with honesty, warmth, and a humanity that resonated deeply with all who listened.

“Fr Odhrán was a man of encouragement and compassion. Many sought him out for advice, comfort, or simply a listening ear. No matter how busy he was, he made time.

“He supported people through their struggles, celebrated their joys, and reminded them — gently and faithfully — of God’s presence in their lives.”

‘TRUE GENTLEMAN’

The tribute added: “May he Rest in the Peace he so often spoke about, and may we honour him by continuing the spirit of service and love he so beautifully lived.

“We sympathise with his family at this time, his parents, Tom and Angela, his sisters Niamh and Majella. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

Wexford GAA expressed its “extreme shock and sorrow” at Fr Furlong’s sudden passing.

It said: “Fr Odhrán was a true gentleman and highly regarded by all who had the privilege to know him.

“He had a long involvement with Wexford GAA, as Spiritual Director to the Association and through backroom roles with many teams.

“He was currently serving with our senior hurling team, where he was principally involved with player wellness, welfare, and mental health, and where he was a great support and help in many other ways too.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to all the Furlong family and to his many friends everywhere. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
