FLOOD ‘DISASTER’

‘Complete chaos’ as Dublin river bursts banks with cars trapped, trains delayed & school forced to close amid flood hell

FLOODING in north Dublin has caused “complete chaos” after heavy overnight rain.

The Mayne River has burst its banks, it has been reported, while cars have become trapped on multiple roads and a school has closed.

Floods have been reported near Dublin Airport, Skerries, Finglas and in Broombridge.

It comes as Met Eireann slapped further weather warnings on counties Dublin and Wicklow after placing the entire country under Status Yellow warnings yesterday.

Dublin and Wicklow will remain under a Status Yellow rain warning until 12pm today before a low temperature and ice warning kicks in for the entire country at 9pm tonight.

The Mayne River has burst its banks according to social media reports.

Nick Delehanty said: “The Mayne River in north Dublin has burst its banks and flooded nearby apartments & houses. Complete chaos.”

The underground car park in his apartment building has flooded, with cars submerged underwater.

He said: “The situation is getting worse. Water is gushing into carpark from the river.

“I have a van parked here, water currently at tyres. Some cars fully submerged. Disaster.”

Mary T Daly, Director of Operations at Fingal County Council, told RTE Morning Ireland that there was flooding “throughout” the area, particularly in the north.

She said: “We would have had sandbags in a lot of areas where we would have known flooding.”

Crews have been out most of the night in response, she added.

Ballyboughal National School has announced that it will not be opening today.

Ballyboughal Community Council reported that multiple roads in the area are badly flooded and a van has become stuck in Roganstown, causing traffic to build up.

Roads have flooded near Dublin Airport causing some vehicles to become trapped.

ROAD CHAOS

Fingal County Council said that their crews are responding to flooding across the county, particularly near the airport.

They said the flooding has affected particularly the R108 and Beau Hill on the Rush to Lusk Road.

The council said flooding has also been reported at the Maltings in Skerries, Turvey at Maxol Garage, and on routes between Dardistown to Turnapin and Balbriggan to Skerries.

Hanlons Lane in Malahide has also been flooded, while a fallen tree had closed Strawberry Beds Road.

They added that the entrance to the Rivermeade Estate has been blocked by flood water.

TRAIN DELAYS

Iarnrod Eireann reported delays on some services in Dublin due to flooding.

They said that the Maynooth and Drogheda commuter services were 20minutes and 22minutes delayed respectively.

Flooding in Broombridge and the Phoenix Park Tunnel has caused the big delays on the services.

Meanwhile, motorists on the M50 have been delayed by flooding and heavy surface water.

The northbound off-slip at Junction 2 near Dublin Airport has been hit by flooding, according to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

MOTORWAY HELL

And surface water has caused tricky driving conditions between Junction 17 and Junction 3 on both sides of the crucial route.

The traffic bosses said: “When approaching the area, reduce your speed and drive with caution.”

The northbound side of the M2 has also been hit by flooding, with TII telling motorists “consider if your journey is necessary”.

The flooding near the airport has caused bus diversions, with Dublin Bus warning that there are diversions on the 16, 24, 27B, 41, 41C and 33.

Dublin Bus spokesperson Blake Boland told RTE’s Today with David McCullagh that delays and diversions could in place for “hours”.

BUS PAIN

He said: “It’s really a case of monitoring the localised flooding, and that’s why we have our own mobile inspectors out on the road.

“We are liaising with the local authorities as well just to see how the situation is evolving.”

Bus Eireann has said that flooding and rain have affected some of its scheduled services in the east of Ireland.

The 9.20am service between Navan and Dublin, the 9.50am route 115 between Enfield and Dublin and some NV1 services have been cancelled.

The heavy overnight rain has also delayed some bin collections in Dublin today.

Greyhouse Household said that their collection teams are “doing everything possible” to reach all their scheduled collections, but warned there could be delays.
