The day he died marked his 52nd wedding anniversary to his late wife, Hazel.

The sad news was confirmed in a social media post shared by Gilbert’s family, who said they were “heartbroken” to announce his passing.

They stated: “It is with a heavy heart that we regretfully inform all our friends of The Spinnaker that our father, Gilbert Brown, passed away peacefully this morning here in Lanzarote.

“Monday would have marked his and Hazel’s 52nd wedding anniversary, and we take comfort in believing they are together again.”

A death notice said Gilbert “will be lovingly remembered” by his heartbroken family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

It read: “Deeply saddened by his passing are sons Steven (Angela), Garrett (Philippa), Raymond (Siran) and daughter Nicola.

“Gilbert will be lovingly remembered by his cherished grandchildren Connor, Emma, Ruby and Coral; sisters and sister and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours and wider family circle.”

Gilbert’s remains were returned to Donegal where he will be laid to rest.

His funeral will take place at Christ Church, Buncrana at 12 noon and will then be followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.

Gilbert’s passing has left the local community devastated, with dozens of people paying tribute to him – including the owners of the Rusty Nail pub and restaurant in Crossconnell in Donegal.

‘DIFFICULT TIME’

In a post on social media, they wrote: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Gilbert Brown.

“A true gentleman and great character who we had the pleasure of spending some great times with.

“Gilbert will be sadly missed, but we are sure that he and Hazel are reunited once again.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brown family at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

‘LOVELY MAN’

Another mourner added: “Such a lovely man. We had great times with Gilbert and Hazel on our weekends in Cork as well as at Spinnaker.

“May he rest in peace with his beloved Hazel, together again.”

A third said: “So sorry for your loss guys. Very fond memories of your dad from my days working there.

“Always enjoyed his stories and company. May he rest in Peace. Thinking of you all.”
